New VfL head coach Mark van Bommel gets his official introduction.

Der Cheftrainer des VfL Wolfsburg Mark van Bommel.

Dutchman Mark van Bommel is the new coach of VfL Wolfsburg, and on Wednesday, the 44-year-old was officially introduced to the press by the Green-and-Whites. Accompanied by VfL sporting director Marcel Schäfer, the former Bundesliga player fielded questions from the media and spoke about…

…his first few days at VfL Wolfsburg: “I came to Wolfsburg by train and have been here for almost a week now. Me and my colleagues from Holland have already settled in very well. I’ve got to know the staff and some of the players already. Overall I have a very good feeling. At VfL, everyone works in a very professional way, we have everything we need here to succeed, and I feel comfortable.”

…his impressions of VfL: “As a player, it was always tough to come to Wolfsburg, particularly in 2009. I hope that this will be the first and the last time that I have to talk about it! Marcel was playing and was part of a 5-1 win. Three years ago, we played a friendly with Eindhoven against VfL, so I’ve always been keeping an eye on how the club is doing.”

…his decision to join the Green-and-Whites: “Over the past year and a half, I’ve turned down a lot of clubs and national teams because I wanted to be sure I was making the right decision. In Wolfsburg, everything is in place for us to be able to work well and be successful. Right from the very first day, I had a feeling that we would all work well together and knew that this was the job to accept.”

… his assistant coaches Kevin Hofland and Michael Frontzeck: “I’ve known Kevin for a very long time. We played a lot in the youth set-up at PSV Eindhoven and in the national team, and our paths crossed again as youth coaches. We have similar ideas and share our opinions – and that’s the way it should be. He has all the qualities you need for this job, and obviously it’s great that he already knows the set-up here in Wolfsburg. And I also wanted to have a German on the staff who knows the league and who is a quality coach. Michael and I talked things through in great detail and I think that we’re a good fit. I’m looking forward to working with him.”

… his goals for the season: “Every sportsperson’s challenge is to improve themselves and I try to do that every year. Even if I don’t manage it, that’s the aim. You obviously have to be realistic as no-one will be underestimating us after last season.”

…his footballing philosophy: “I have my own idea of how I want to play football, but that obviously depends on the players. I like to play an attractive, attacking style. There’s no better feeling for a coach than sitting on the bench and seeing that the team understands how you want to play and is managing to put that into practice.”

VfL sporting director Marcel Schäfer also spoke about…

… coach Mark van Bommel: “We are convinced that in Mark van Bommel, we have a head coach who really fits in here. Our idea of working with young, hungry and highly talented players is one that the coach is on board with. He completely identifies with our approach. We are going to enjoy a lot of success together.”
