VfL Wolfsburg Women earned all three points in their first competitive game of the new year after defeating 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam 3-2 on a snow-covered pitch at the AOK Stadion.
Rebecka Blomqvist was among the goals on her debut, while Kathrin Hendrich and Zsanett Jakabfi were also on target for the She-Wolves in their FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga Matchday 19 encounter that was brought forward and played ahead of schedule. Selina Cerci and Nina Ehegötz scored for Potsdam.
The result means the second-placed Green-and-Whites close the gap on Bayern Munich, temporarily at least, with the league leaders facing SV Meppen on Sunday. VfL’s next game is on Sunday 14 February (kick-off 14:00 CET) at home to another team from the top half of the table, with third-placed TSG 1899 Hoffenheim the visitors.
“We battled our way into the game”
VfL head coach Stephan Lerch: “In my opinion the game shouldn’t have been played due to the snow. That wasn’t a football match out there today. I would like to highlight that my team showed fantastic character. We battled our way into the game, adapted to the conditions and kept pushing ourselves. The players deserve huge credit for their mental toughness.”
