The coaches’ assessments of the Wolves’ 1-0 win over the Billy Goats.
The Green-and-Whites found it tough going for a long time against an impressive Köln side and were fortunate not to be behind at half-time, before Josip Brekalo struck to secure a hard-earned 1-0 victory VfL head coach Oliver Glasner was therefore a happy man in the post-match press conference.
Oliver Glasner: “That was a really difficult game today against a very good Köln team. They made life hard for us. In the first half in particular, they did a lot of running, were very aggressive and their wingers and full-backs caused us constant problems with their deep runs. We weren’t in the game as we would’ve liked and really didn’t play well in the first half, but we also knew we could do better. We showed that in the second half and controlled the game very well. After that, it was important to make the most of your opportunity when you got it. Josip finished it off very well after great effort from Wout. I’m very happy about the win today.”
Markus Gisdol: “If you just look at the performance of the team, we had a good game today. Similar to the match against Dortmund, we found a good way to get at the opposition and cause them difficulties. We gave little away against highly rated opposition and also did very well going forward in the first half. The only thing we were lacking in the game was the end product. If we can keep up the performance level of the last two games – and that’s our challenge – then we’ll soon be able to pick up points.”
