The coaches give their thoughts on the Wolves’ 1-0 win at Oleksandriya.
VfL Wolfsburg secured their place in the knockout stages of the UEFA Europa League on Thursday evening courtesy of a 1-0 victory. Wout Weghorst’s first-half penalty was enough to earn a narrow win, and the goalless draw in the other match in the group between AS Saint-Étienne and KAA Gent means the Wolves are already through with one round of fixtures left to play. VfL host Saint-Étienne on the final matchday (12 December, 21:00 CET), while Oleksandriya travel to Gent.
Oliver Glasner: “The overwhelming feeling is one of relief and delight that we’ve achieved our objective of reaching the knockout rounds of the Europa League – and with one game to spare, no less. Great credit to the team, who came through a difficult game. The hosts showed exactly what I expected: they were aggressive, hard-working and didn’t give up. It says something about us that we’re the only team who have managed to win here in the group stage. Therefore I’m very happy that we’ve succeeded.”
Volodymyr Sharan: “I saw a good performance from my players. Wolfsburg have very good quality, particularly in the technical department. They also have more experience than us. Physically we were at a similar level but against players like [John] Brooks, [Jeffrey] Bruma and Weghorst, who are all 1.90 metres tall, we didn’t get many chances to break through. As well as that, we were missing some important players because of injuries and the early withdrawal of Kyrylo Kovalets didn’t help us. Nevertheless, the team kept fighting until the last second.”
