Goal-filled fourth friendly

VfL Women inflict 9-3 defeat on fellow Bundesliga team SV Werder Bremen.

Die Frauen des Vfl Wolfsburg jubeln auf dem Spielfeld.

VfL Women had already racked up three wins against international opposition in their pre-season preparations, most recently a 2-0 victory over Dutch champions FC Twente. Head coach Tommy Stroot’s team followed that up on Saturday with an equally impressive performance against a fellow Bundesliga team, thrashing SV Werder Bremen 9-3 in Ankum.

Svenja Huth struck twice for the Green-and-Whites, with further efforts from Tabea Wassmuth, Turid Knaak, Sara Doorsoun, Rebecka Blomqvist, Jill Roord and Joelle Smits with an own goal accounting for the other one. Werder twice took the lead, through Margarita Gidion and Rieke Dieckmann, and also equalised at 3-3 though Reena Wichmann.

After the match, VfL travelled back to their training camp in Harsewinkel, where they will face Bayer 04 Leverkusen in their final warm-up match on Friday 20 August at 15.30 CEST.

“Rather win 9-3 than 1-0”

VfL head coach Tommy Stroot: “Today we were really on fire, no doubt because Werder also knew that this wasn’t just an ordinary pre-season friendly – it was a real test. There were obviously some aspects that didn’t go so well. I’d rather win 9-3 than 1-0 – even though I know that other coaches would probably see things the other way.”
