“Freiburg will push us to our limits”

VfL Wolfsburg host SC Freiburg on Sunday.

The Wolves have been a force to be reckoned with at the Volkswagen Arena this season. The Green-and-Whites are yet to lose a single Bundesliga game on home soil in 2020/21, suffering just two defeats overall. Ahead of Freiburg’s visit to VfL in Matchday 19’s final fixture on Sunday 31 January (kick-off 18:00 CET), head coach Oliver Glasner answered the media’s questions on…

…the opposition: “After a difficult start they’ve changed their system and have been playing in a 3-4-3 formation for around ten matchdays now. They’ve lost only one game in that time and that was away in Munich. That shows that they’re also very consistent. I’m expecting a difficult game for us, because they’re very strong physically and tactically. They’re disciplined, they move the ball quickly, they’re exceptionally dangerous at set-pieces and they’ll push us to our limits.”

…Freiburg being this season’s surprise package: “I wouldn’t call them that. I’m not surprised that they’re in such a good position once again. They were already very good last year and the majority of their squad has remained intact. In Christian Streich, they’ve had the same coach for many years. There’s a lot of continuity at Freiburg.”

…VfL’s recent results: “We’ve been able to work hard with the team. The lads have done very well. We’re now seeing the results of our efforts in training. We’re looking very consistent at the moment – I can see that in every session. There’s a lot of dedication. The players are very attentive and are always looking to improve. We need to keep it up and mustn’t ease off or relax at all.”

…personnel: “Renato Steffen trained today without any problems. I’m expecting him to be fully fit. Wout Weghorst hasn’t trained with us yet, but everything’s fine with him after his examination and as things stand, he’ll take part in our final training session tomorrow and be fit for Sunday. Jerome Roussillon is also training with the rest of the team. We’re preparing him physically, one step at a time, so he can get back playing for us again. Jeffrey Bruma is also back on the pitch, so every outfield player will be involved in our final training session tomorrow.”
