Germany coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg announced her squad this Tuesday for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, which is being held from 7 June – 7 July. Among the 23 names were four players from VfL Wolfsburg, namely Alexandra Popp (who will be captaining her country), Sara Doorsoun, Lena Goeßling and Almuth Schult. Goeßling, Popp and Schult have already appeared in the Women’s World Cup, in 2011 in Germany and 2015 in Canada.
For Doorsoun however, it will be her debut on this, the biggest of footballing stages. Future She-Wolf Svenja Huth will also be in the squad for France, making it a total of five VfL women looking to put a third star on the German jersey. Felicitas Rauch – another who will be joining the Green and White next season – is on the reserve list and could still end up being part of the tournament.
Germany begin their campaign on 8 June with the opening group game against China (kick-off: 15:00 CEST), before taking on Spain (12 June, 18:00 CEST) and South Africa (17 June, 18:00 CEST). The final is being held in Lyon on 7 July.
