VfL Wolfsburg are back in action on Wednesday (kick-off 20:30 CEST) as they take on 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the first midweek programme of the current Bundesliga campaign. The Wolves will be looking to bounce back after suffering first defeat of the season at home to SC Freiburg last weekend. In the press conference ahead of the clash with the 05ers, head coach Bruno Labbadia discussed…

…possible changes to the line-up: “We’re in decent shape and we’ve just come through what was a very intensive game against Freiburg when you look at the data. Despite that, we feel the players have recovered well, so changes will be determined by the details – what suits this match and how can we best bring out the strengths of our players?”

…coming to terms with the first defeat of the season: “We put in a night shift on Saturday in order to put the Freiburg game behind us as quickly as possible. It was important for us to analyse our play again, what we did well and what we didn’t do so well, so that we can write the match off. Everyone saw that the commitment and the willingness were very high and that the team didn’t give up even when it was 3-0. The focus is now completely on Mainz. That’s why we watched Mainz’s game at Leverkusen on Sunday and their previous one against Augsburg.”

…expectations of the game: “I’m expecting a very intensive game, similar to Freiburg. Mainz have made a great start to the season and also played well despite the defeat at Leverkusen. It’s about what we do now. In training we’ve prepared for the opposition and for the match.”

…his defence: “Ideally we always want to keep a clean sheet but with the way we play, there’s always a chance we can concede. It’s therefore important that every player knows what to do, especially when we lose possession. Ultimately, though, what matters is that we always score one more than we let in.”
