“Expecting a tough fight”

Oliver Glasner gives his thoughts on the weekend trip to Union Berlin.

Approximately 30 minutes after the UEFA Europa League Round of 16 draw pitted VfL Wolfsburg against Shakhtar Donetsk, head coach Oliver Glasner addressed the media as he looked ahead to Sunday’s Bundesliga fixture at Union Berlin (kick-off 13:30 CET).

The VfL boss on…

…the short period of preparation ahead of the game: “We’ve got our final training session tomorrow and then we’re heading to Berlin. We know what to expect: a similarly compact and noisy stadium with a great atmosphere like the one we experienced in Malmö yesterday. Union are very solid at home and are a physically very strong and robust team. They make life difficult for you; they attack high up the pitch and put you under constant pressure. We’re expecting it to be a tough fight there.”

…the possible return of injured players: “Neither Josh Guilavogui nor Jerome Roussillon are available to us in Berlin. There are also question marks surrounding Paulo Otavio and Josip Brekalo, who both received hefty knocks against Malmö, and have still got some swelling.”

…the in-form Yannick Gerhardt, who has replaced Guilavogui in midfield: “Every single player is very important. Whether that be Paulo Otavio, who’s filled in for us, or Renato Steffen at right-back, or the guys we’re rotating up front. I’m happy that the fit and healthy players are in good shape. I think we’ve still got plenty in the tank, and we’ll give it everything we’ve got in Berlin.”
