All six VfL players involved in EURO 2020 are into the Round of 16.
Schlager and Pervan to face Italy
Austria have qualified for the knockout phase of a European Championship for the first time in their history, after a 1-0 win over Ukraine in the last match secured second place in Group C. Xaver Schlager played the full 90 minutes, while Pavao Pervan watched the historic victory from the bench. The Austrians now meet Italy in the Round of 16 on Saturday 26 June (kick-off 21:00 CEST). “We want to go as far as we can, win the game and make history,” said Pervan ahead of the clash with the Italians.
Swiss duo book place against Turkey
There was also delight for Switzerland, who beat Turkey 3-1 in their final Group A match last Sunday and have qualified for the last 16 as one of the best third-placed teams. Admir Mehmedi came on in the 85th minute against Turkey, while Kevin Mbabu was a stoppage-time substitute. The Swiss will now play either Belgium on Sunday 27 June in Seville, or the winner of Group F on Monday 28 June in Bucharest.
Perfect group stage for Weghorst and Netherlands
The Netherlands had little trouble overcoming North Macedonia on Monday in their last group outing and the 3-0 victory confirmed the Oranje as winners of Group C with maximum points. VfL frontman Wout Weghorst started on the bench this time, replacing Memphis Depay in the 66th minute and going on to hit the woodwork. The Netherlands now face either Czech Republic or the third-placed team from Group F in the last 16 on Sunday 27 June in Budapest (kick-off 18:00 CEST).
Croatia win without Brekalo
Croatia also successfully navigated their final group match to book their place in the Round of 16. Zlatko Dalic’s side beat Scotland 3-1 on Tuesday, with VfL winger Josip Brekalo not featuring on this occasion. Croatia will now take on the Group E runners-up on Monday 28 June in Copenhagen (kick-off 18:00 CEST).
