VfL Wolfsburg’s women got their Bundesliga title defence off to a winning start at home to 1. FFC Frankfurt on Sunday afternoon. In the official opening match of the 2018/19 season, goals from Pernille Harder (30’), Ewa Pajor (64’) and Alex Popp (77’) secured a convincing 3-0 victory for Stephan Lerch’s side in front of 1,886 fans at the AOK Stadion. The result rounded off a successful week for the Green-Whites following their 11-0 thrashing of Hannover 96 in the DFB Cup and their first-leg victory at Thor/KA in the UEFA Women's Champions League.
“Use the transitions”
Stephan Lerch: “Early on we couldn’t find a way through against the compact opposition defence and often tried our luck from distance. But our plan was that if Frankfurt gave us the room, we would seize it and use the transitions. That’s how the first goal came about. The longer the game went on, the more control we got. We had some nice passages of play and got into good areas between the lines. I’m pleased we were able to add to the scoreline while not giving away anything at the back. Overall I’m pleased with our start.”
