VfL Wolfsburg’s women’s team eased to a 4-1 victory over Sporting CP in the first of two friendlies during their training camp in the Algarve. Alexandra Popp (2), Pia-Sophie Wolter and Anna-Lena Stolze bagged the goals for Stephan Lerch’s side in the meeting between the domestic champions of Portugal and Germany, which took place in the small town of Castro Verde. Despite some tired legs following an intensive week of training, the She-Wolves dominated proceedings with a high share of the possession and quick link-up play. The team’s next friendly is in just two days’ time (1 February) as the VfL Ladies take on Bundesliga rivals 1. FFC Frankfurt, who are also based in the Algarve for their training camp. The game in Vila Real de Santo António kicks off at 17:00 CET.
“Can draw valuable conclusions”
VfL head coach Stephan Lerch: “Considering our workload prior to the game and the less-than-perfect condition of the pitch, it was a successful friendly. You could see that the players were committed right from the off and tried to move the opposition around. Not every pass reached its target but that’s normal at this stage of our preparations. We were very dangerous at set-pieces and also scored goals from them, which was very pleasing. Sporting CP were good opposition who wanted to play football themselves, so we had to stay tight at the back and be alert. Other than their goal, a shot from long distance, we gave them very few chances. All in all it was a match that we can draw a lot of valuable conclusions from.”
