VfL Women face Werder Bremen on the final day of the Bundesliga season.
After clinching the DFB Cup for the eighth time with victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the final last weekend, VfL Wolfsburg Women have the chance to follow that up with their seventh league title on Matchday 22 of the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga season. For that to happen, the She-Wolves require a win against SV Werder Bremen at the AOK Stadion this Sunday (6 June, 14:00 CEST kick-off) and, at the same time, a defeat for leaders FC Bayern Munich in their match at home to Frankfurt.
As well as the small matter of the title, numerous departures will also be the focus of the season finale. In Friederike Abt, Lara Dickenmann, Ingrid Engen, Lena Goeßling, Zsanett Jakabfi and Fridolina Rolfö, six players are bidding farewell to the Green-and-Whites. It is also the final game for head coach Stephan Lerch and his assistants Ariane Hingst and Theresa Merk, as well as other members of the backroom staff.
In his pre-match press conference, Lerch spoke about…
…team news: “Joelle Wedemeyer will definitely miss out. Fridolina Rolfö also has a knock from the cup final and hasn’t trained at all yet this week. Even if she can take part in the final training session, it looks unlikely that she’ll be involved.”
…the final appearance in a VfL shirt for many players: “As I said, it probably won’t happen for Fridolina Rolfö, but we are determined for the players who are leaving to play for VfL one more time. I also think that – with all due respect – we should be able to beat Bremen regardless of who’s on the pitch. It’s certainly going to be emotional with all the goodbyes.”
