The Wolves showed great character last weekend to earn a 2-2 draw away to 1. FC Union Berlin with 10 men, and now they face another tough test as they welcome RB Leipzig to the Volkswagen Arena on Saturday 16 January. At his pre-match press conference, head coach Oliver Glasner discussed…

… VfL’s performances against sides above them in the table: “If you look at the matches overall, you can see we’ve closed the gap on these teams. In Munich we had 17 shots to Bayern’s 11, and in Dortmund we also had considerably more efforts on goal than they did – but we still didn’t win. Everything needs to click if you want to beat the top teams. In these kinds of games we still have plenty of room for improvement, especially in terms of our efficiency in front of goal.”

…the opposition: “Of the 12 goals they’ve conceded, three were scored by Bayern and three by Dortmund. RB are a tough side to play against, but we believe we’ve found a couple of ways to create space for ourselves and cause their defence some problems. Leipzig are favourites. Their objective is clear – to qualify for the Champions League again – and I think they’ll be fighting for the Bundesliga title until the end of the season.”

…Maximilian Arnold’s absence: “Max has become an absolute cornerstone of our game. He consistently plays really well and is always dangerous as our dead-ball specialist, so it’s a shame he’ll miss this match. Having said that, we showed against Stuttgart in particular, but also in the DFB Cup, that we can compensate for his absence as a team. Other players can step in.”

…personnel: “The situation has improved a bit. Josip Brekalo was able to train without any problems, so he’s available. Maxence Lacroix has trained all week without any kind of negative reaction. Marin Pongracic was checked over by the doctors for three days and all his results are fine. We’ve got the green light there. Jerome Roussillon won’t be ready this weekend though, and Jeffrey Bruma is still isolating at home.”
