Bitter defeat

VfL Women lost 2-0 at home to Juventus in the UWCL.

VfL Wolfsburg Women were unable to mark their historic 75th appearance in the UEFA Women’s Champion League with a win on Thursday, instead slipping to a 2-0 defeat at home to Juventus. After the teams drew 2-2 in Italy last week, an own goal from Kathrin Hendrich (53’) and a stoppage-time strike from Andrea Staskova (90’+3) gave the visitors the points in front of a crowd of 1,725 in Wolfsburg.  The result means the She-Wolves drop down to third place in Group A with two rounds of group stage matches still to play, while Juve climb to second. The Green-and-Whites are in action again as soon as Sunday 21 November when they welcome SGS Essen to the AOK Stadion in the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga (kick-off 18:00 CET).

Goals

  • 0-1 Hendrich (o.g., 53’): Barbara Bonansea crosses the ball into the middle, where Hendrich, under pressure from Lina Hurtig, inadvertently flicks the ball into her own net with her left thigh, leaving Almuth Schult no chance.

  • 0-2 Staskova (90’+3): Juventus break forward at pace and Bonansea draws three VfL defenders towards her as she enters the box, before laying the ball off to Staskova, who applies a clinical finish.

Reaction

Tommy Stroot: “We took charge in the first half, but it’s in Italian teams’ nature to stop you getting into a flow. In both games we had the opportunities to beat Juve. They weren’t the better team, which makes it hurt even more. We lacked clarity, though, particularly in the final third. But if we win in Geneva, then we’ll have a decider in Wolfsburg. Therefore our job now is to get a win in Geneva to give ourselves every chance. We’ll face up to this difficult task.”
