The dream of a DFB Cup final in Cologne and a seventh title in a row is very much alive, but to make it a reality, VfL Wolfsburg Women will have to achieve the seemingly impossible – a win over FC Bayern Munich. Sunday 4 April (kick-off: 14:00 CEST) will see the DFB Cup-holders take on the undefeated Bavarian side in the semi-final. Head coach Stephan Lerch spoke to the media ahead of the match about…
…FC Bayern Munich: They are playing some wonderful football – very calm and focused. The self-confidence that they go out onto the pitch with is worth its weight in gold, and that’s why they’re the favourites heading into this semi-final. But on our day, we can still beat them.
…the team’s approach: Our aim is to make no mistakes or to keep them to a minimum to ensure that they don’t get punished. And at the same time, we need to draw Bayern into making errors – they’re only human after all. As is often the case in matches like these, it comes down to little details. If we can play some really good football over 90 or 120 minutes and make the most of set pieces and counter-attacks, then we’ll have a genuine chance of inflicting Bayern’s first defeat on them.
…what is likely to be the last chance of winning a trophy: Obviously we all realise that we have our fate in our own hands as far as the cup is concerned and that we’re only two wins away from winning a title. We want to see it as an opportunity and have a now-or-never mentality. But we’re not focusing on this aspect of it too much.
