The VfL Wolfsburg Women were in fine form in their first European outing of the new season. On Wednesday afternoon, head coach Stephan Lerch’s side posted a 5-0 victory away to ZFK Spartak Subotica in the first leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League round-of-32 tie.
Zsanett Jakabfi hit a brace (4’, 55’), while Lena Oberdorf (8’), Dominique Janssen (30’) and Felicitas Rauch (77’) were also on the scoresheet for the Green-and-Whites in the home of the Serbian champions.
The return leg will take place on Wednesday 16 December at the AOK Stadion (kick-off 18:00 CET, live on Wölfe TV). Before then, last season’s double winners face a north-German derby away to Werder Bremen on Sunday 13 December (kick-off 14:00 CET), as they bid to pick up three more points in the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga.
“A really good result”
Stephan Lerch: “I think we did our job superbly. We expected Subotica to go into the tackles aggressively and to reduce the spaces at the back. In that sense, it was great that we could score two early goals. That paved the way for our win and it meant we could avoid expending too much energy later on as well. I’m very satisfied. A 5-0 win is a really good result.”
