VfL Wolfsburg were beaten 1-0 at promoted VfL Bochum on Sunday evening in the final fixture of Matchday 18. Milos Pantovic’s 64th-minute header earned the Ruhr district club all three points. The Wolves, who remain stranded in the bottom half of the table after a sixth successive league defeat, were toothless in attack and unable to carve out any meaningful opportunities over the 90 minutes.
Hertha BSC up next
Florian Kohfeldt’s side welcome Hertha BSC to the Volkswagen Arena in their first home game of the calendar year on Saturday 15 January (kick-off 15:30 CET).
1-0 Pantovic (64’): Bochum take the lead! Wout Weghorst loses possession and the hosts break down the right. Gerrit Holtmann crosses towards Pantovic, who beats Maxence Lacroix to the delivery and heads past Koen Casteels.
Florian Kohfeldt: “We have to accept the result. We didn’t manage to control the 90 minutes in a manner that would have helped us avoid defeat. In my view, though, it was an even game that was decided by a situation in which we were poorly organised in the penalty area and gave the ball away cheaply in the build-up. We had two great chances just before that. We did a few things well defensively, but couldn’t find a way of dealing with Bochum’s man-to-man marking. As a result, the game was on a knife-edge. To lose the game in the situation we’re in is typical, unfortunately. It’s important that we try to do something about it again next week and don’t complain about it. In terms of the basics in training over the last few days, I’ve seen a lot of positives. We’ll keep working to find that moment in a game that relieves the pressure. We were unable to do that today.”
Thomas Reis: “We’re obviously pleased to have made a very good start to the year. We’ve set ambitious targets and analysed the first half of the season, where we conceded an awful lot of chances. We managed to prevent those for the most part today. In the first half it was a very even game. We wanted to put Wolfsburg under pressure from the start and we managed to do that very well. We ended up getting the goal after winning the ball back and sending in a good cross. We defended brilliantly after that. It was a very good team performance.”
