Bayern away – always a big match

All you need to know ahead of the Wolves’ trip to FC Bayern Munich.

VfL Wolfsburg will be looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the season tonight away to FC Bayern Munich (kick-off 20:30 CET). Bayern are currently having a tough time of things by their extremely high standards, with Hansi Flick’s team having won just one of their past four Bundesliga matches and currently finding themselves on a two-match winless ‘run’ – their worst stretch of the 2020 calendar year. Here are more facts and figures ahead of the match:

  • Of their last four 20:30 kick-offs against Bayern, VfL have won two and drawn one. That match finished 2-2 back in September 2017, with goals from Maximilian Arnold and Daniel Didavi. This was also the last time that VfL picked up points against Bayern.

  • The only other time that the Green-and-Whites have avoided defeat in 23 visits to the German record champions was in December 2001. Tomislav Maric scored twice with Dietmar Kühbauer also on the scoresheet in a 3-3 draw.

  • FCB have let in as many headed goals so far this season (five) as they did in the entire previous Bundesliga campaign. VfL, meanwhile, have scored four headers in their past four league matches.

  • Wout Weghorst has racked up nine goals in the first 11 Bundesliga matchdays, more than any previous Wolfsburg player at this stage of the season.

  • The Dutchman only opened his account on Matchday 4. In the eight games since then, he’s failed to find the net in just one, making him the form striker of the league at the moment.

  • Bayern have conceded the first goal in each of their last five league matches – the last time that happened, Jürgen Klinsmann was at the helm. Nevertheless, they managed to pick up points on each occasion.
