The official confirmation has come through that VfL midfielder Maximilian Arnold is part of head coach Stefan Kuntz’s 19-strong Germany squad for the forthcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo. This means that he will miss out on much of the Wolves’ pre-season training.

“Really looking forward to it”

For Arnold, who captained the Germany U21 team to the EURO title in 2017 under Kuntz, the call-up is a great honour. “I’m really looking forward to it – even more so obviously after I had to miss out on 2016 due to injury,” he said. “It makes the call-up really special.“ It does however mean that Arnold will miss the majority of the Green-and-Whites’ pre-season.

Brazil first up on 22 July

Germany are in Group D and will open their campaign on 22 July against Brazil (kick-off at 13:30 CEST), before facing Saudi Arabia (Sunday 25 July, kick-off at 13:30 CEST) and Ivory Coast (Wednesday 28 July, kick-off at 10:00 CEST).
