VfL Wolfsburg have been eliminated from the 2021/22 DFB Cup. In Frankfurt on Thursday, the DFB federal court rejected VfL’s appeal and upheld the decision of the DFB sporting tribunal to award SC Preußen Münster a 2-0 victory in the first round of the DFB Cup. The Wolves won the match on 8 August 3-1 after extra-time, but Münster ended up contesting the result because VfL made six substitutions instead of the permitted five.
“Hoping for a different decision”
“We obviously regret the outcome of the proceedings and were hoping for a different decision,” said VfL managing director Dr. Tim Schumacher. “We have – despite our mistake – presented good arguments which, in our opinion, would have warranted a replay. In the spirit of fair play, though, we accept the ruling of the DFB federal court and are now focusing on the upcoming tasks in the Bundesliga and Champions League.”
