On Tuesday afternoon, with Poland and Senegal, the final two participants in the 2018 World Cup in Russia got their campaigns underway. The Polish starting eleven included VfL Wolfsburg’s Jakub Blaszczykowski. On the day, "Kuba" began his 100th international match for Germany’s neighbours and simultaneously made his first appearance on the World’s greatest international footballing stage. With Poland participating in the World Cup finals for the first time since 2006, it was also the 32-year-old VfL man’s first World Cup involvement. For “Kuba”, his participation was to end after 45 minutes, with Polish coach Adam Nawalka substituting the right midfielder at the break due to injury. By that stage, Poland were trailing to the Africans following an own-goal by Thiago Cionek (37’). In the end, Senegal ran out 2-1 winners, with Mbaye Niang adding a second (61’), before Poland pulled back a late goal through Krychowiak (86’).
