The need-to-know facts on the DFB Cup last-16 clash at home to Schalke 04.
Oliver Glasner’s side will be battling it out with FC Schalke 04 at the Volkswagen Arena from 18:30 CET this evening for a place in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup. Previous cup ties against Schalke have been very tight affairs: in the last 16 of the 2007/08 competition, VfL won 6-4 on penalties. Ten years later, they edged out the Royal Blues 1-0 in the quarters. The Wolves are therefore still looking for their first win in normal time.
The rest of the facts and stats ahead of Wednesday’s meeting:
As well as the Brazilian, there are four other Schalke players who were not in the squad for the first league meeting between the two sides earlier in the season: January signings Sead Kolasinac, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Shkodran Mustafi, plus rising star Matthew Hoppe.
While the Green-and-Whites overcame Union Fürstenwalde and SV Sandhausen to get this far, the Royal Blues saw off Schweinfurt 05 (4-1) and SSV Ulm (3-1) in the earlier rounds.
This is the fifth year in a row in which Schalke have reached the round of 16, and they’ve progressed to the next round every time.
