The need-to-know facts on the DFB Cup last-16 clash at home to Schalke 04.

Oliver Glasner’s side will be battling it out with FC Schalke 04 at the Volkswagen Arena from 18:30 CET this evening for a place in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup. Previous cup ties against Schalke have been very tight affairs: in the last 16 of the 2007/08 competition, VfL won 6-4 on penalties. Ten years later, they edged out the Royal Blues 1-0 in the quarters. The Wolves are therefore still looking for their first win in normal time.

The rest of the facts and stats ahead of Wednesday’s meeting:

  • It’s a quick return to the Volkswagen Arena for VfL right-back William, who only moved to Gelsenkirchen on loan last week.

  • As well as the Brazilian, there are four other Schalke players who were not in the squad for the first league meeting between the two sides earlier in the season: January signings Sead Kolasinac, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Shkodran Mustafi, plus rising star Matthew Hoppe.

  • While the Green-and-Whites overcame Union Fürstenwalde and SV Sandhausen to get this far, the Royal Blues saw off Schweinfurt 05 (4-1) and SSV Ulm (3-1) in the earlier rounds.

  • This is the fifth year in a row in which Schalke have reached the round of 16, and they’ve progressed to the next round every time.

  • The 4-0 victory over Sandhausen in the second round was the Wolves‘ biggest win in the competition for nearly six years. They also beat Arminia Bielefeld by the same scoreline on the way to lifting the trophy in Berlin in 2015.
