After coming away with a point apiece from the top-of-the-table encounter with Bayern in the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga, the She-Wolves remain in a position they have been familiar with for much of the season – namely needing the leaders to drop points elsewhere if VfL are to lift their seventh league title.
In a tight, tense match Bayern were able to maintain their lead at the summit, which has shrunk to two points recently, with just two rounds of fixtures remaining in the 2020/21 campaign.
Sydney Lohmann opened the scoring for Bayern in the 34th minute, but Ewa Pajor equalised in the 81st minute of a game in which the Green-and-Whites had to make do without the injured Alexandra Popp.
The team’s last away match of the season is against Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday 23 May (kick-off 13:30 CEST), a game that doubles up as a dress rehearsal for the DFB Cup final between the same teams the following week.
“We’ll continue doing our job”
VfL head coach Stephan Lerch: “Obviously we’re disappointed on the one hand. We needed to win the match to overtake Bayern and take matters into our own hands, but we didn’t do that. Overall it was a great, exciting match. I have to give credit to our team. We played well and created a few good chances, but didn’t manage to reward ourselves in the decisive moments. But we still have hope and that’s how we’ll approach our last two games. We’ll continue doing our job. It’s down to us to keep the title race alive until the very end.”
