The VfL Wolfsburg Ladies fly out to Portugal on Wednesday for their winter training camp.

The She-Wolves could hardly have picked a better time to resume their preparations for the second half of the season in sunnier climes. While temperatures continue to plummet throughout Germany, the VfL Ladies are flying to Portugal on Wednesday to begin their mid-season training camp. The unbeaten Bundesliga leaders will remain in Vila Nova de Cacela, a small town situated on the south-eastern tip of the Algarve, until 3 February.

VfL will play two friendlies during their stay in Portugal. The German double winners take on Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon on 30 January (kick-off 18:00 CET) before facing Bundesliga rivals 1. FFC Frankfurt on 1 February (kick-off 17:00 CET).

Ready and waiting

Several key players will not be on board when the plane carrying the VfL squad takes off from Hanover airport on Wednesday morning - but for good reason. After spending the last few days in south-western Europe with their respective national teams, a number of the Green-Whites’ international stars have opted either to stay on the Iberian Peninsula or head directly to the Algarve to avoid unnecessary travel.

Germany trio Lena Goeßling, Alexandra Popp and Almuth Schult will already be at the hotel when the rest of their team-mates arrive for dinner on Wednesday, while Mary Earps, Sara Gunnarsdottir, Pernille Harder, Caroline Hansen, Kristine Minde and Noelle Maritz are also travelling individually. Long-term absentee Lara Dickenmann is the only member of the VfL squad not making the trip to Portugal.
