Three new signings, one departure and three loan deals were completed by the Wolves during the January transfer window. Sporting director Olaf Rebbe, who secured the services of three new attacking options in Renato Steffen, Josip Brekalo and Admir Mehmedi for VfL Wolfsburg, admitted to being very satisfied with the current Green-White squad, on the day after the winter transfer-window closed. "There were certainly more transfers completed than we had initially planned, but I am now very happy about the composition of the team. We believe we have a very well-balanced group together – a squad which can develop further as a unit," stated the 39-year-old.
Reactions to the Gomez move and injuries
The transfer of Mario Gomez to this weekend’s home opponents VfB Stuttgart and a number of long-term injuries influenced the Sporting director and head-coach Martin Schmidt to re-think their plans. "In signing Mehmedi, we reacted to the injury-forced loss of Jakub Blasczcykowski, who will be unavailable to us for an undetermined length of time. Steffen had been an issue for us during the summer. Both have Champions League experience and are internationals. In addition to that, Josip was a good option for us. We were very happy to be able to bring him back here," explained Rebbe on the selection of the new men, adding: "We wanted to make sensible additions to the squad, to strengthen our position further still. We’ve done that now and that’s all that counts."
The sporting improvements to the squad are seen by Rebbe in the new found variability: "We are now more unpredictable. The coach has more options and can operate with different tactical systems." Another important issue for the Sporting director was indeed the financial element, as well as rational dealing during the difficult winter-transfer market. "We always look to strengthen our squad based on sound judgement, which we believe we have managed to do during this transfer period." However, for Rebbe, satisfaction with the squad does not now mean that he can now sit back and relax: "Work continues as normal now. There are enough other topics which need to be driven forward."
