The VfL Wolfsburg Ladies’ side have been on fire so far in 2018/19, winning all five of their first competitive fixtures across the Allianz Frauen-Bundesliga, DFB Cup and UEFA Women’s Champions League without conceding a single goal. Even so, the She-Wolves are only second in the league at present thanks to the similarly emphatic form of FC Bayern, who boast a superior goal difference. This Sunday, 30 September (14:00 CEST), the two sides meet at the AOK Stadion in a clash between two of this season’s title favourites. Ahead of the game, coach Stephan Lerch gave his thoughts to the media on…
…the big game: "I’d be lying if I said the match against Bayern was a normal game. The dominance of the two teams over the last couple of years makes this a clash of two international-class teams. The individual quality in both sides is enormous. The two teams have also developed considerably over the past few years, in terms of fitness and infrastructure. These sorts of games are always a real highlight because it’s the best two teams in Germany facing one another and you always want to pit yourself against the best. I don’t want to over-hype it, though, because ultimately it’s just another Bundesliga match we want to win – like any other."
…his advice to the team: "We’ve put in two good performances in the league – and that wasn’t easy. That’s given us confidence, but we need to stay focused in defence and stop Bayern from getting in between the lines. We need to try and find space ourselves and keep the tempo high. We need to put them under pressure. If we can do that, I’m confident we’ll get a positive result."
…Alexandra Popp’s fitness: "Alex didn’t play in the Champions League in midweek as a precaution, but she’s back in training now and looking good for Sunday."
