After dropping points for the first time this term in a 1-1 draw at Turbine Potsdam on Wednesday – the final game of the first half of the Allianz-Frauen Bundesliga campaign – the She-Wolves responded with an impressive away win in Frankfurt on Sunday.
VfL dominated most of the encounter, goals from Alexandra Popp (4') and Caroline Hansen (23', pen 32') before the break, and Pernille Harder (64'), Lena Goeßling (70') and Zsanett Jakabfi (82') in the second half sealing the 6-2 victory. Tanja Pawollek scored for the hosts to make it 3-1 in the 42nd minute, with Laura Freigang on target 19 minutes later for 3-2.
The win means VfL go eight points clear of FC Bayern Munich at the top of the standings, although the Bavarians can reduce that gap to five points when they take on Bayer Leverkusen later on Sunday.
VfL welcome SGS Essen to the AOK Stadion (kick-off: 14:00CET) on Sunday 16 December for their final fixture of the calendar year.
"Positives and negatives"
VfL head coach Stephan Lerch: "We're really happy to have won this game. We came here with a lot of respect because we know how tough it is to pick up points in Frankfurt. We started well, immediately made our presence felt going forward and the early goal of course played into our hands. After that we wanted to keep the pressure up, continue attacking and we managed to increase the lead. We then dropped off a little bit because we were a little bit careless in some of our play, but that's partly down to having expended a lot of energy during an intense week of action. After they made it 3-2 it became quite tense and hectic – we didn't have control, but we responded well. There were positives and negatives – we had good phases, but at other times made too many simple mistakes."
