Wolves set for dress rehearsal
VfL Wolfsburg take on Napoli in their final pre-season friendly ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.
Once again, the Wolves’ fan and family day takes place one week before their first competitive fixture of the new season. As well as fun activities and a diverse stage programme, visitors can also look forward to an intriguing friendly match on Saturday 11 August, as VfL face Italian giants Napoli in their final pre-season assignment before the start of the 2018/19 season. The game at the Volkswagen Arena kicks off at 19:30 CEST, straight after the “Wolfsburger für Wolfsburg” charity match featuring the VfL Wolfsburg Ladies and the Grizzlys Wolfsburg ice hockey team (kick-off 17:45 CEST).
Both teams face final friendly
The Green-Whites are set for a tough test against last season’s Serie A runners-up, whose first competitive game of the new campaign also takes place a week on Saturday. Napoli travel to Lazio in their first league fixture of 2018/19, while the Wolves face SV Elversberg in the first round of the DFB Cup (kick-off 15:30 CEST on Saturday 18 August).
Carlo Ancelotti, a man VfL supporters know only too well from his time in the Bundesliga in charge of Bayern Munich, took the reigns at Napoli earlier this summer. The 59-year-old’s star-studded squad features no fewer than 18 full internationals, including Slovakian midfielder Marek Hamsik, Belgium forward Dries Mertens and Italian striker Lorenzo Insigne. Ancelotti is determined not only to cement his team’s place in the top two of Italy’s top flight, but also to help the club lift their first piece of silverware - domestic or European - since 2014.
VfL last faced Napoli in the quarter-final of the 2014/15 UEFA Europa League. Timm Klose and Ivan Perisic got on the scoresheet as the Wolves recovered from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 in Italy, only for Dieter Hecking’s side to slip to a 4-1 defeat in the return leg. The Italians were knocked out by Ukrainian outfit FK Dnipro in the last four.
