VfL Wolfsburg produced a fine performance to beat Ajax 3-0 on Friday evening.

Goals from Ignacio Camacho (60’), Daniel Ginczek (66’) and Admir Mehmedi (77’) earned Bruno Labbadia’s side an impressive victory against last season’s Eredivisie runners-up in their penultimate friendly of pre-season.

Brekalo suffers injury

In front of just 300 spectators, the hosts nearly took the lead with just ten minutes on the clock, but Zakaria Labyad pulled his effort wide of the left-hand post. Josip Brekalo was forced off with a back injury just seven minutes later, with Jakub Blaszczykowski replacing the 20-year-old on the left flank. Wout Weghorst and Mehmedi both spurned promising opportunities for the Wolves before the break, but there was nothing to separate the two sides at half-time.

Wolves turn on the style

It was a different story after the interval as Labbadia’s charges began to turn the screw. They were rewarded for their dominance on the hour-mark, Camacho capitalising on an under-hit clearance before calmly lifting the ball into the back of the net from the edge of the box. The Wolves continued to take the game to the Dutch giants and doubled their lead through Ginczek after a fine cross from Yannick Gerhardt. With 13 minutes remaining, Ginczek won the ball in midfield and released Mehmedi, who coolly slotted home to put the seal on an eye-catching victory.

Labbadia rues lack of bite

Speaking to reporters afterwards, head coach Labbadia did not appear entirely satisfied with his team’s performance, despite the impressive result. “I wasn’t pleased with our tackling today,” he said, before lamenting his players’ profligacy in front of goal and lack of cutting edge in the final third. “I was pleased that we were able to produce a performance in these temperatures, though, as we’ll have to do the same against Elversberg [in the DFB Cup first round],” added the 52-year-old, who changed formation several times against Ajax. “It’s a good sign that the boys don’t need very long to adapt to different systems.”
