VfL secure 4-1 win over SGS Essen: VfL women claim DFB-Cup final spot.

For the fifth time in their history, and the fourth season in succession, the women’s team from VfL Wolfsburg have progressed to the DFB-Cup final. On Sunday afternoon, the Lady-Wolves notched up a 4-1 (2-0) home victory over SGS Essen. The goals for the Green-Whites were scored by Caroline Hansen (17'), a brace from Pernille Harder (42'/ 47') and Sara Gunnarsdottir (87'), the consolation for SGS Essen was scored by Sarah Freutel (58'). The final in Cologne (Saturday, May 19th – 15:00 CEST) will see VfL take on FC Bayern Munich, who simultaneously earned a 3-1 semi-final win over 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam. The Lady-Wolves will be in action again next Sunday, April 22nd, when they face Chelsea LFC in the first-leg of the UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final tie (kick-off 19:05 CEST).

"Fantastic moral, mentality and body-language"

VfL coach Stephan Lerch: We didn’t start the game well – Essen were good and put us under a lot of pressure. We had problems to release ourselves from their pressing game. However, we knew we find the space in behind the opposition defence – which is what we looked to do. That’s the way we played out our goals and ultimately it was just about jabbing out a foot and putting the ball in the net. We fought our way into the game and were then calmer in possession. We knew we’d have to be alert at all times and that Essen wouldn’t throw in the towel. It was naturally great for us to make it 3-0 just after the break. That was an exceptional time to get the goal. The goal that Essen pulled back gave them a renewed boost, but we stuck to our guns right to the finish, displaying fantastic moral, mentality and body-language. We are of course delighted to be in the final again – especially as we knew it would be as tough a challenge as it was here.
