“The defeat hurts”
The coaches’ reactions following Werder Bremen’s 3-1 win.
VfL Wolfsburg didn’t manage to take anything from Sunday’s game at Werder Bremen. With seven potential starters missing, the visitors weren’t able to show their attacking qualities and lost for the second time this week following Wednesday’s DFB Cup exit at Schalke 04. Despite pulling a goal back, the Wolves didn’t manage to salvage a point and the 3-1 defeat at the Weserstadion leaves VfL just one point ahead of Bremen, dragging them further into the relegation battle.
Martin Schmidt: It’s another game that we’re very unhappy with. The defeat hurts because there were a lot of things we wanted to do today – particularly in terms of tackling and setting the tempo from kick-off – but then we didn’t carry that out and we’re 1-0 down after our first error. We picked ourselves up a bit after that, although we were lucky not to be three or four goals down at half-time after the last 15 minutes of the half. Words were said in the dressing room and we demanded a reaction. We had the chance for Victor [Osimhen] and then got the goal back and grew into the game. Then the next error arrived and the game was over at 3-1. We’re not winning the key battles at the moment and that’s why we’re talking about another defeat. Everyone knows that it's a critical time, now it’s about sticking together and stopping this trend.
Florian Kohfeldt: We played very well in the first half, with the early goal and lots of good spells. We defended well, won second balls and created good chances. After the break the plan was to keep playing smartly, but then straight away they got their first real chance, which annoyed me a lot, and then the penalty. However, we reacted well in that we didn’t give too much away and took full advantage of the counter. The points were in the bag then. It was a very important home win for us.
