In a brief interview, Josip Brekalo spoke about the first training sessions, his contract extension and pre-season test matches.

The first week of training since the summer break is now in full flow. In order to provide the best possible basis for the 2018/2019 campaign, the Green-Whites have already put in some tough training sessions on the grounds at the VfL-Center. Before Saturday’s clash with the Veltins-Selection (July 7th, 14:00CEST, Flutmulde Gifhorn), there was time for a brief interview with Josip Brekalo, who will wear the number 7 in the coming season.

The summer break is over and there are now many strenuous training sessions on the schedule in preparation for the coming season. How is it to be back in training?
Josip Brekalo: The legs are a bit heavy, as we already have several training sessions behind us. That’s just the beginning though. Over the next two weeks we will continue working hard on our fitness. We need to prepare very well for the new season, because we are well aware that things didn’t go well in the last two campaigns. Now we are giving our all to ensure things work out better for VfL.

Immediately at the end of last season, you extended your contract with the Green-Whites until 2023. What motivated your move to commit to VfL for even longer?
Brekalo: The club provides very good possibilities for me. When I initially decided to move to Wolfsburg, I already knew the club suited me perfectly. As I am still a young player, I can continue to develop at VfL. It’s very important to me to take a step here – and I haven’t done that yet.

Today you play the first pre-season test match. Aside from the clash with the Veltins-Selection, there are naturally further tests on the schedule. What is important for you in those games?
Brekalo: In the friendly games, we must show that we can operate together as a team. Those games help us to see how the individual players work together on the pitch. Aside from that, over time a first eleven can then materialise. Every player is himself responsible for giving his all. In that way we push ourselves mutually as a team.
