The VfL women racked up an impressive 4-0 (0-0) win away to AC Fiorentina in the UWCL.

The Lady-Wolves have taken a major step towards booking a quarter-final place in the UEFA Women`s Champions League. After a frustrating first-half, when the AC Fiorentina defence seemed unbreachable, the Lerch eleven were merciless in the second period. A brace from Sara Gunnarsdottir (49', 60') along with further strikes from Pernille Harder (54') and Alex Popp (73') put the Green-Whites on the right track. The Lady-Wolves are thus in a very strong position for the return-leg in Wolfsburg next Wednesday (November 15th, 18:00 CET) at the AOK Stadion.

Lerch with praise for the performance

VfL head coach Stephan Lerch bemoaned the abundance of wasted opportunities in the first-half, but was ultimately very satisfied with the display from his side after the re-start: "We knew we would be facing a tough opponent, who would close down the spaces. Fiorentina were defensively very compact in the first-half, whilst we failed to find a solution and played too many poor passes. We had some very good chances on goal, but we didn’t make them count." The Lady-Wolves opening goal early on in the second period then opened the floodgates. "After the 1-0 we got a boost in confidence. We were then far more determined and played better on the attack." The coach also had some special praise for AC Fiorentina, and the fantastic atmosphere created by the fans in the stadium. "I have the utmost respect for the setting here – the atmosphere was amazing."
