Goal glut in the Champions League
The VfL ladies outclassed Atletico Madrid with a 12-2 victory and progress to the Champions League 'Round of 16'.
The Bundesliga women from VfL Wolfsburg have progressed to the next round of this season’s Champions League competition in emphatic fashion. In the ‘Round of 32’ return-leg, coach Stephan Lerch’s eleven notched up an impressive 12-2 (8-1) victory over Atletico Madrid on Wednesday evening – adding to their convincing 3-0 away win over the Spanish champions last Wednesday evening. A hat-trick from Alexandra Popp (2'/15'/16'), along with a brace each for Lara Dickenmann (33'/44'), Pernille Harder (29'/49'), Tessa Wullaert (57'/83'), a goal each for Sara Gunnarsdottir (8'), Caroline Hansen (69') and an own-goal (41') secured the stunning victory for the Green-Whites in front of a crowd of 1,700 in the AOK Stadion. As to who last season’s double-winners will face in the next round (8th/9th and 15th/16th November), will be decided at the draw in Nyon on Monday, October 16th.
"Great goals and an enjoyable display"
Stephan Lerch: "We had expected our opponents to try attack us immediately and get an early goal. The fact that it worked out quite on the contrary and that we got the early goal really settled us. Subsequently, we went about the game with great joy and we scored some really great goals. Recently we often criticised our finishing. The fact that we can do that very differently is something which the team displayed impressively today. Now we can go about the tasks ahead of us with even more self-belief."
