We meet again

Facts and figures on VfL Women’s DFB Cup final against FC Bayern Munich.

VfL Wolfsburg Spielerin Nuria Blanco setzt sich mit dem Ball am Fuß gegen eine Gegenspielerin aus München durch.

On Thursday 9 May (kick-off 16:00 CEST), VfL Wolfsburg Women are bidding to win the DFB Cup for the 10th year in a row, and the 11th time in total. However, in order to do so they have to overcome difficult opponents in Bayern Munich. Here’s all the knowledge you need ahead of the showdown.

  • Longest winning run: VfL have won 49 cup matches in a row from 2014 to the present day. A 50th against Bayern would clinch a 10th successive title.

  • Extra time six times: In six of those 49 victories, the Green-and-Whites went beyond normal time. The contest was decided in extra time on four occasions, while penalties were required twice, both in finals – against Bayern in 2018 and SGS Essen in 2020.

  • Faultless so far: The She-Wolves have yet to concede a goal in the cup this season, while scoring 19 goals themselves. The Green-and-Whites have gone all the way in the competition without conceding a single goal once before, namely in the 2018/19 campaign.

  • Always Bayern: This is the eighth season in a row in which Wolfsburg have come up against Bayern in the DFB Cup. VfL have come out on top against FCB away from home on five occasions, once at home and once in the final.

  • Cup specialists: Alexandra Popp has experienced all 10 of the club’s cup successes and has made a total of 38 appearances in the competition for the She-Wolves. Ewa Pajor has eight cup winner’s medals and 28 appearances to her name, while Joelle Wedemeyer has won the cup with VfL nine times and featured in 24 games to date.

  • Bayern going for double: Munich already sealed the Bundesliga title last Saturday with a 2-1 win over Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The Green-and-Whites have to settle for second place in the league this year.

  • Sellout: The organisers are expecting around 44,000 spectators at Cologne’s RheinEnergieStadion on Thursday. The stadium, which has hosted the cup final since 2010, is sold out.
