Women

Big home win

The She-Wolves earned a comfortable 5-1 victory over 1. FC Köln.

Die VfL-Wolfsburg-Spielerinnen jubeln zusammen.

With just a week to go until the DFB Cup final, VfL Wolfsburg Women hit their stride and recorded a thumping 5-1 win over tenth-placed Köln.

Unassailable half-time lead

The 3,152 spectators at the AOK Stadion saw a match in which the Green-and-Whites dominated from the outset. Goals from Dominique Janssen (7’), Ewa Pajor (12’/23’) and Alexandra Popp (36’) gave Tommy Stroot’s side a comfortable 4-0 advantage at the interval.

Huth milestone

The visitors did manage to reduce the deficit early in the second half (54’), but it was nothing more than a consolation, with Vivien Endemann putting the seal on the She-Wolves’ win late on (80’). That made it a double celebration for team captain Svenja Huth, who made her 300th Women’s Bundesliga appearance.

VfL now have a few days to rest and recover before heading to Cologne on Tuesday for the DFB Cup final, where they will meet Bayern Munich on Thursday 9 May at 16:00 CEST.

Reaction

Tommy Stroot: “The first half was fantastic; I was very pleased with it. We were aggressive and clinical. It was a richly deserved win, and the result guarantees us the runners-up spot in the table.”
