Jentzsch and Co. outclass Scotland

Jentzsch: Little to do!

Germany’s Team 2006 side (including Simon Jentzsch)produced a good performance in the Carl-Benz-Stadion in Mannheim on Tuesday evening (7.12.04). The side called into life in order to give German young players a chance to shine at international level, outclassed the Scotland “Future” team beating them 3-0. It was the third victory in eight matches for the side coached by Erich Rutemöller, who made seven changes to the side which lost 1-2 to Poland last time out.

Only the VfL Wolfsburg keeper Jentzsch and Streit, Engelhardt and Auer kept their place in the starting line-up. The Scots, coached by the German football legend  Rainer Bonhof, travelled to Mannheim with a sqaud full of youngsters from the Scottish Premier League

Fine start

The Germans went ahead after only six minutes as Broich fed Auer who fired in a low shot into the bottom left hand corner. The visitors tried hard but failed to make any impact on the well organised home defence. 14 minutes later, Schröter cleverly headed on to Auer, who scored a spectacular goal from almost on the sideline! It took 27 minutes for the Scots to trouble Simon Jentzsch who was recently nominated by Jürgen Klinsmann for the trip to Asia. A deflected header went high into the german box where Jentzsch failed to gather it. Luckily for the home side youngster Matthias Langkamp was on hand to clear the danger. Germany went into the half time break with a well deserved 2-0 lead.

More changes

Rutemöller made four further changes fort he second half including the amateur Patrick Helmes, who plays for Sportfreunde Siegen. Two goal hero Benjamin Auer ("It was a great night") remained in the changing room at half time because of a blood pressure problem. The second half began with a quick strike by the German home side. Diamond failed to clear far enough as danger threatened and the Hertha midfielder Thorben Marx was nicely placed on the edge of the area, where he placed an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner on 51 minutes.

Madlung goes close

The game was all over bar the shouting and there was little goalmouth action fort he 4,500 crowd to enjoy in Mannheim. On 73 minutes Hertha’s Alex Madlung missed a good chance to put the Team 2006 further ahead. A swift counter attack by the Germans should have resulted in a goal on 75 minutes, but it wasn’t to be. Helmes had a headed goal disallowed just before the end, but by that time the German side was home and dry.
