‘Wolves’ 2009/2010 - first-half analysis

With seven goals to his name, Edin Dzeko was VfL’s top goal-scorer in the first half of the season.
Wolfsburg - VfL Wolfsburg may be a total of seven places off the top of the Bundesliga table at the moment but, in spite of that, the ‘Wolves’ did manage to display qualities during the first half of the 2009/2010 season that no other side can hold a candle to. In a total of four categories, Armin Veh’s men were head and shoulders above the rest.
On only two occasions so far during the current campaign have VfL failed to find the opponents net - away to Bayern in Munich, a game that finished 3-0 for the home side, (the ‘Wolves’ only away defeat) and in a score-less draw with Hertha Berlin. Otherwise, VfL Wolfsburg managed to score at least once in every game - including the last seven successive games, which no other team managed to do.
The ‘Wolves’ were particularly potent in front of goal during the second 45 minutes. 24 of the ‘Wolves’ 32 goals during the first half of the season were scored after the half-time break - another achievement unmatched in the league. No other team managed more that 20 goals after the break.
Just in the period between the 46th and 60th minutes, the eight goals notched up by the ‘Wolves’ during that particular period also eclipses all competitors. The most potent individual in front of the opposition goal was Edin Dzeko. The Bosnian international, who along with Grafite shot his way into the record books in 2009, not only marked up 13 goals in all competitions since the start of the season, but with 76 attempts, also had more shots on goal than any other player in the Bundesliga. Second placed Juan Arango (Borussia Monchengladbach) had, in total, twenty attempts on goals less than Dzeko.
