First international goal for Hanke

The 21-year old celebrates: Mike Hanke after the 3-0 win over Tunisia

Köln/Wolfsburg – The German national team has won their second game at the Confederations Cup.On Saturday (18.06.05) national coach Jürgen Klinsmann’s team beat African champ Tunisia 3-0 (0-0) in the sold-out Cologne Stadium. The final goal was scored by new Wolfsburger Mike Hanke. Thomas Brdaric did not play. Since Argentina beat Australia 4-2, the German hosts have already qualified for the semi-finals.

The guests had their first chance in front of the 44,377 spectators in the 26th minute, when Jens Lehmann was just able to steer the ball around the posts on a corner kick by Clayton. The hosts had a difficult time for a long time until MichaelBallack woke his team up with a head ball after a corner kick(32.). But Clayton cleared up the line and prevented the 0-1 before the break.

Hanke a successful Joker

At the beginning of the second 45-minute period, the hosts put on more pressure. But this phase quickly faded away and the Tunisians won control of the game. Adel Chedli (56.) had the best chance of scoring when he made a good shot, but Lehmann blocked it with style. It is almost symptomatic that it was a standard situation that brought the winning goal for the hosts: Michael Ballack converted an 11-meter penalty kick, after he had himself been brought down in the penalty area (74.).

The spell seemed to be broken – Germany upped the ante. Bastian Schweinsteiger raised the score to 2-0 on an outstanding assist from Lukas Podolski (80.).The final point was scored by Mike Hanke after being brought in the 87th 87 minute. VfL’s new acquisitionscored his first goal in an international game in his second game for Germany (89.).On Wednesday (8:45 P.M., live on ARD) the DFB team meets Argentina without the suspended Arne Friedrichin their last Group A game.
