Superb strike

Gerets: "Great goal"

Take your minds back to the 41st minute of the Wolves’ Bundesliga round 31 home game against HSV, whose Dutch-born defender Khalid Boulahrouz had just brought down the Wolves striker Brdaric on the right hand side of the HSV penalty area. Not a bad chance for the home side. A chance for Martin Petrov to put in a dangerous cross, thought the 28,000 crowd (and no doubt the HSV keeper Wächter) in the VOLKSWAGENARENA. Everyone there however, had not reckoned with what happened next…

Bulgarian magic!

The Bulgarian winger Petrov wasn’t thinking in his wildest dreams of putting in a cross, but unleashed a perfectly struck 30 metre shot which flew into the far left hand corner of the HSV net with the HSV keeper Wächter nowhere. It was a superb strike and surely a candidate for the goal of the month award. It turned out to be the winning goal, as the Wolves defence denied the HSV onslaught time and time again.

Caution to the wind

"My first free kick was a poor one, so I decided to take more of a risk with the second one. I train free kicks in training a lot and luckily that one went in,“ revealed an obviously delighted Petrov, who added: "The victory was crucial for our confidence and for team spirit."

Two coaches in agreement!

There was plenty of praise for Petrov’s goal, including from the HSV coach Thomas Doll who admiringly admitted that it was a : "Brilliant shot". "A superb goal", was the way the Wolves coach Gerets described the strike. Even the HSV keeper Stefan Wächter couldn’t hide his admiration as he said: "One has to give praise where it is due. The ball flew into the far corner and it was a great goal," admitted the keeper.
