Gerets: “I feel I will be here next season”

- Gerets and Strunz: Turbulent times
Are things calming down now? The last week was a turbulent one for the Wolves coach Erik Gerets, and it ended with a bitter 0-1 home defeat against struggling Nürnberg. So how are things at the club now? The Belgian-born coach gave an interview to a Wolfsburg newspaper (WAZ) during which he described his feelings on Sunday in the VOLKSWAGENARENA, and the tremendous support from the Wolves fans for him…
WAZ: The home fans were chanting your name shortly before the end of the game against Nürnberg, how do you feel when you here such things?
Gerets: I never really heard it because I was concentrating on matters on the pitch. If that was the case, it makes it even worse that we can’t give them a bit of success at the moment.
How do you mean?
Gerets: I realise that a rapport has developed between me and the fans, and that they respect my work. That is unusual considering the way we are playing at the moment.
The 0-1 result was a painful one…
Gerets: It was our last chance to qualify fort he UEFA Cup, now we have to try to qualify for the Intertoto Cup.
The chanting of the fans can be interpreted as support for you in your disagreement with the club manager Thomas Strunz. Did your meeting with him on Friday sort everything out?
Gerets: I think that it would be wrong to mention anything about it in public, it is and will remain an internal matter.
What about your future?
Gerets: I have the feeling that I will still be here next season.
