Sleepless nights…

- Jentzsch: Tough times
The awful 1-5 defeat away to Bochum has left its mark on the Wolves skipper Simon Jentzsch. Three days after that bitter disappointment, vfl-wolfsburg.de spoke to the Wolfsburg goalie in the latest Captain’s Corner weekly interview. In the interview Jentzch admits that: "I haven’t slept well at all since the match. We let ourselves, the club, our fans and our coach down, we can’t afford another match like that: "I would rather play Bayern today to get the Bochum game out of my head,“ added Jentzsch…
vfl-wolfsburg.de: Simon,Erik Gerets described the performance in Bochum as "disgraceful", and that he had never expierienced anything as bad in 13 years of coaching. "Collective failure" was an expression used by yourself after the match,. with hindsight, how do you assess the heavy defeat in Bochum?
Simon Jentzsch: As I said, it was a collective failure on our part, we were awful in defence. The first and third goals came by way of dead ball situations; we failed to win a decisive tackle which led to their second goal.
It must have been especially bitter for you…every Bochum shot seemed to go in. Have you ever experienced anything like it before?
Jentzsch: I have experienced negative things in my career and the defeat in Bochum is right up there in the top five of my negative list. I would like to mark that date in my calendar with a big black cross. We failed to react after going two goals behind.
Erik Gerets was shocked by the performance in Bochum. At the post-match press conference he stated that he might resign. Can you imagine how he is feeling inside?
Jentzsch: Yes I can, and I think that the players are feeling the same. On a personal note, I can only say that I haven’t slept well since Bochum, and I have thought a lot about what went wrong on that day. We let ourselves, the club, our fans and our coach down.
Gerets cancelled the player’s day off on Monday, stating that he expected answers from the players who had let him down. How did the discussions go?
Jentzsch: We just had to discuss the game and we did so on Sunday. The meeting took longer than usual, about two hours. Things had to be said which hurt people. After such a performance you can’t just return to everyday things. It was a shame that all of the players were not present.
The Bundesliga is having its Easter break. Is it a welcome opportunity to clear a player’s mind? Or is it a disadvantage because you have to wait a fortnight before the Bundesliga resumes and have more time to think about things?
Jentzsch: I would rather take on Bayern today in order to get the Bochum experience off my mind.
Bayern – the perfect opponent in your current situation…
Jentzsch: To play against Bayern, is the Non-Plus-Ultra in German football. I’d like to take to the pitch with the team today, and show a different reaction than we did in Bochum. It is crucial that we learn from our mistakes, we have watched them three or four times in slow motion pictures. We are well aware that we cannot afford another performance like the one in Bochum.
How do you plan to spend the Easter break?
Jentzsch: I will spend it at home with part of my family.
Simon – chin up, and have a nice Easter.
